WKF was formed in 1990 from former WUKO members and is the largest international governing body of karate with over 130 members’ countries. It is the only karate organisation recognised by International Olympic Committee and has more than 10 million members.
WKF organises the junior and senior world karate championships which are each held every other year.
Scores are as follow: SONBON (3 score) ,NIHON (2 score) , IPPON(1 score). A score is awarded when a technique is performed according to the following criteria to a scoring area.
1. The contestant will respond to the calling of her/his name by going directly to competition area. She/He will stand on a designated line and bow to the panel. She/He will announce clearly the name of kata which is to be performed and then start it. On completion of the kata, the contestant will return to the designated line and await an award from the panel.
2. The chief judge will call for a decision (HANTEI).
3. The caller /announcer will announce the scores awarded and when these have been registered.
4. In the first round of Kata competition, the contestant must perform a schedule kata. The choice must be announced in advance so as to be included in the draw sheet for that round. In the second round a different choice, similarly notified, must be made from schedule. In the 3rd round, the constant may perform any kata not previously performed from the listed katas by the four major styles of karate recognised by the World Karate Federation (Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu, Shoto Kan and Wado Ryu).
